Hi everyone! I hope everyone had a wonderful (long) weekend, in spite of midterms.Today is Canada’s Thanksgiving, the perfect time to start practicing gratitude around you. For my part, I am grateful to be able to study what I’m passionate about in an awesome city like Montreal. I’m also thankful that this week has only 4 days and that I was able to catch up on all this wonderful studying. (Read: Netflixandnapsallweekend#NOREGRETS).

Now, next on our program, the week’s highlights in the marvellous realm of historians at McGill! (I will go back to sleep after that I promise).

Reminder | 2015 Beaverbrook Annual Lecture – Media @ McGill

For its flagship event, the 2015 Beaverbrook Annual Lecture, Media@McGill is excited to announce the speaker as Professor Wendy Brown.
The title of her talk is “Neoliberalism Contra Democracy: Ten Theses.”

The 2015 Beaverbrook Annual Lecture will be on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at 6 p.m., and will be given at the Faculty of Law, Moot Court, McGill University, 3644 Peel Street.

The Lecture is free and open to the public. There will be no registration. Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition, the Lecture will be livestreamed, and there will be an overflow room.

Geological and Architectural Stroll around Montreal

Where do the stones used for the buildings of Sherbrooke Street come from? What story do they tell? The coeur des sciences de l’UQÀM will take you on a 2 hour tour to discover the geological and architectural secrets of downtown Montreal.

The activity’s guide will be Lillia Bouhalassa and Coalie Zorzi, both master candidates, respectively for the urban studies department and the geological and atmospheric sciences department of UQÀM.

ÉcoCiné – Haida Gwaii: On The Edge Of The World

A documentary by Charles Wilkinson. Canada, 2015, 74 minutes, anglais.

At a stunning low altitude, aerial cinematography sweeps over the Haida Gwaii, a breathtakingly beautiful archipelago off the British Columbia Northwest Coast. It takes us into the geographic heart of the Haida Gwaiian people, who thrived for more than 10,000 years until they were decimated through disease, rampant commercial logging and industrial over-fishing since contact. Today, the Haida Nation is recovering, exerting their sovereignty and winning battles against unsustainable logging and fishing. Award-winning director Charles Wilkinson turns his camera on the unique community uniting to protect land and sea for the next generation. Haida hereditary Chief Allan Wilson, renowned activist Guujaaw and non-indigenous eco-activist Severn Cullis-Suzuki work alongside scientists, organic farmers, artists and quirky islanders to create a synergy of sustainable development. But Haida Gwaii sits squarely in the path of the proposed Tar Sands seaway to Asia. The desperate fight to protect land and sea may be just beginning.

The projection will be followed by a discussion with Nicolas Houde, professor at the political science department of UQÀM and associate researcher at the Chair of Canada in Quebec and Canada studies.

Oct. 20 – 22: The McGill Book Fair
One of the highlights of the fall events calendar, the McGill Book Fair will take place from October 20 – 22. Since its founding in 1971, the Fair has raised more than $1.6-million for scholarships. As is tradition, the sale will be held in Redpath Hall. This year, not only will there be an amazing assortment of books in all categories from Art to Zoology and everything in between, there will also be several thousand vinyl LPs, plus hundreds of CDs and DVDs.
The Fair is open for business on: Tuesday, Oct. 20 (1 p.m. – 9 p.m.); Wednesday, Oct. 21 (10 a.m. – 8 p.m.); and Thursday, Oct. 22 (10 a.m. – 6 p.m.) Check out the Fair’s Facebook page for more details.

Call for Submissions

A call for papers for the Canadian Historical Association / Société historique du Canada annual meeting at the University of Calgary, May 30-June 1. The conference theme is “Stories” and the application deadline is October 15. For more information.

Canons, the undergraduate journal of religious studies is now accepting applications to be an editor for the 2015-2016 academic year. The journal is to be published in the Winter semester. You will be asked to submit a writing sample and to answer a short questionnaire. Please send all inquiries to mcgillcanons@gmail.com. You do not need to be in Religious Studies to apply. Experience is an asset but not required. The deadline to submit an inquiry is October 23 at 11:59 PM, and the final deadline to submit writing samples and questionnaires is October 25 at 11:59 PM.
