Good morning everyone!
Alas, summer’s over, and classes already started since two weeks (WHAT). Anyways, I’m Charlotte Mercille, your new VP Comms, double majoring in psychology (aka has no idea what she’s doing here) and I am proud and scared to succeed my excellent predecessor Ben Wong who will be greatly missed. I hope I can entertain and inform you at least as half good as he did. The HSA had a lot of things to settle for the upcoming year so I apologize for the delay of the first Listserv. Let’s make the best of the new year and the exhilarating month of September, always full of promises. We hosted our first Welcome Back event last Wednesday but don’t worry if you missed it, there will be plenty of occasions to chat and have fun with other history buffs!

Media@McGill | 2015 Beaverbrook Annual Lecture : Neoliberalism Contra Democracy: Ten Theses
For its flagship event, the 2015 Beaverbrook Annual Lecture, Media@McGill is excited to announce the speaker as Professor Wendy Brown. The title of her talk is “Neoliberalism Contra Democracy: Ten Theses.”The 2015 Beaverbrook Annual Lecture will be on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at 6 p.m., and will be given at the Faculty of Law, Moot Court, McGill University, 3644 Peel Street.
The Lecture is free and open to the public. There will be no registration. Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition, the Lecture will be livestreamed, and there will be an overflow room.

Aboriginal Awareness Week
McGill’s fifth annual Aboriginal Awareness Week will be held from Sept. 21 – 25. Designed to increase awareness at McGill about Indigenous peoples in Canada, the week honours the many Indigenous cultures across the country including First Nations, Métis and Inuit. This year’s edition features workshops, film screenings and lectures with a special focus on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and a symposium on Indigenous Women’s Activism. New Mobile Apps Workshop at McGill Library
Apps for Academic Success! is a new McGill Library workshop that will teach students how to use mobile apps to find, access, manage and create scholarly works. It will be offered on Sept. 23 and Sept. 30 in the David C. Edwards Cyberthèque Classroom in the Humanities and Social Sciences Library. Registration is required.
The Mossman Endowment of McGill University presents: João Biehl on “Public Ethnography and the Fabulation of Power”
In the 2015 Mossman Lecture, Princeton anthropologist João Biehl will re-think a failed collaborative research project on the judicialization of the right to health in Brazil as an experiment in public ethnography.

Call for Papers: New Perspectives on the Black Intellectual Tradition
The African American Intellectual History Society (AAIHS) invites proposals for its first annual conference scheduled to take place at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill on March 10-11, 2016. Proposals are due on November 15, 2015
Through a series of papers, panel sessions, roundtable discussions, films, and talks, this two-day conference will explore the vital contributions that black artists, writers, activists, and thinkers have made to U.S. and global intellectual history. Focusing on theorizing black intellectual history, forging community connections, and integrating the digital humanities into historical research, the conference will explore the individual and group contributions of black intellectuals and black institutions to national and global politics, racial ideologies, social justice movements, popular culture, and more
AAIHS welcomes proposals from scholars at all career stages (from graduate students to senior faculty), as well as independent scholars. We welcome submissions for scholarly papers (20-minute presentations), organized panels of four papers, poster sessions, lecture-demonstrations, film/video screenings, or workshops. Proposals should be submitted via email (aaihs10@gmail.com) as a Microsoft Word attachment no later than November 15, 2015. The conference organizers will notify participants of acceptances by December 30, 2015.
Paper proposals should include an abstract of no more than 250 words and an abridged C.V. (1-2 pages). Panel proposals should include a 250-word abstract and abridged C.V. for each presenter in addition to a 250-word panel description. All submissions should include the name(s) of presenter(s), institutional affiliation, title of presentation, format of presentation (paper, panel, poster, workshop, etc.), e -mail address, phone number, and A/V equipment requirements.

Register for the Students in Mind 2015 Mental Health Conference!
Students in Mind is an annual student mental health conference at McGill University that engages in conversation regarding mental health and mental illness. The conference explores issues that have led to the stigmatization of mental illness and barriers that have prevented open communication. Participants also explore the intersection between mental health and a broad range of topics, including community impact, cultural influences, and treatment avenues.

Bon matin tout le monde!
Hélas, l’été tire à sa fin et les classes sont déjà recommencées depuis deux semaines (QUOI). Quoi qu’il en soit, je me présente, Charlotte Mercille, votre nouvelle VP communications jonglant entre deux majeures en psychologie et en histoire (aussi appelée la fille qui n’a aucune idée de ce qu’elle est en train de faire). Je suis à la fois fière et intimidée de succéder à mon irremplaçable prédécesseur, Ben Wong qui sera grandement regretté au sein de l’équipe. J’espère que je saurai vous divertir et vous informer au moins à moitié autant que lui. L’exécutif de l’Association avait plusieurs affaires à régler pour la formidable année qui débute, de sorte que je m’excuse pour le début tardif des Listserv. Si vous n’étiez pas au courant, nous avons invité tous les membres de l’association à venir prendre le thé mercredi dernier pour le souligner la rentrée mercredi dernier. Ne vous inquiétez pas si vous avez manqué l’événement, il y en aura beaucoup d’autres au courant de l’année pour s’amuser entre férus d’histoire.

Semaine de sensibilisation aux cultures autochtones
McGill tiendra la 5e édition de la semaine annuelle de sensibilisation aux cultures autochtones entre le 21 et le 25 septembre prochain. La semaine a pour mission de conscientiser la communauté mcgilloise sur la réalité des Premières Nations canadiennes et met à l’honneur différentes cultures autochtones du pays incluant les Métis et les Inuits. Au programme, plusieurs ateliers, projections de films et conférences se pencheront sur la commission “Truth and Reconciliation” en plus d’accueillir un symposium sur l’activisme des femmes autochtones. Appel à soumissions: Nouvelles perspectives sur la tradition intellectuelle noire
La société d’histoire intellectuelle africaine américaine (AAIHS) fait un appel à soumissions pour sa première conférence annuelle à l’Université de la Caroline du Nord le 10 et 11 mars prochain. Les papiers doivent être reçus d’ici le 15 novembre 2015.
AAIHS accepte les propositions d’étudiants aux cycles supérieurs jusqu’aux membres sénior de la faculté, ainsi que les historiens indépendants Les propositions doivent être envoyés par email (aaihs10@gmail.com) en pièce jointe au format Microsoft Word. Les organisateurs aviseront les candidats sélectionnés autour du 30 décembre 2015.
Les résumés ne doivent pas dépasser 250 mots et doivent être accompagnés d’un CV abrégé (1-2 pages). Les panels doivent également avoir une description d’au plus 250 mots. Toutes les soumissions doivent indiquer le nom du présentateur, l’affiliation universitaire, le titre de la présentation, le format (papier, panel, poster ou atelier, etc.), l’adresse courriel, le numéro de téléphone et un devis technique.

«Students in Mind» est une conférence annuelle sur la santé mentale à l’Université McGill qui engage les étudiants et membres du personnel dans une discussion sur le contexte de la maladie mentale. La conférence explorera les facteurs qui ont conduit à la stigmatisation de la maladie mentale et les barrières qui empêchent une communication plus ouverte sur le sujet. Les participants pourront également visiter les sujets reliés de la communauté, des influences culturelles et de l’avenir des traitements.
