The Preamble
Good evening everyone,
Greetings from the exotic land of the Greater Toronto Area! I hope you all had a great reading week: I’m currently still in the process of eating my body weight in Markham sashimi (the best), so this will be short. Our benevolent president Disha just finished finalizing details for an incredibly exciting round table in collaboration with Montreal Hip Hop Week! I am personally unqualified to moderate, as I originally thought that French Montana was a 17th Century Jesuit trading post, but Disha will be hosting four professors to discuss how musicians across the world have used hip hop, Kpop, etc. to shape and influence understandings of history, culture, and the nation. Plus, free lunch!
In other news, the nomination period for exec positions in the AUS and its vassal departmental organizations open on Monday! This includes the HSA. We have five positions: President, VP Internal/Events, Finance, External/Academic, and Communications. I highly encourage anyone interested to apply: not only will you get prime real estate in Leacock (6th floor janitors’ closet), but you will also be able to organize fun round tables, wine and cheeses and casual seances with departmental money! If you have any questions about any of the positions, feel free to e-mail the respective execs.

“Music and Movement: The Intersection of Song, Diaspora, and the Nation-State”
Tuesday, 17 March, 11:30am-1:30 pm (Arts 160)
The HSA and McGill Hip Hop Week will be hosting a panel on the way musicians and their craft have shaped our understanding of history, culture, and national spaces. Prof. Jeffrey Ogbar from the University of Connecticut will be joined by Prof. Michelle Cho from East Asian Studies, Prof. Shanon Fitzpatrick from History, and Prof. Bronwen Low from Education. Each speaker will be discussing an aspect of their work as it relates to music history and the complex relationships between different communities and aural identities. An informal discussion will follow the presentations. Lunch will be provided. All are welcome. The poster is attached to this e-mail.

Memory and Commemoration: The Azrieli Holocaust Collection at Thirty

The Concordia University Libraries invite you to attend “Memory and Commemoration: The Azrieli Holocaust Collection at Thirty,” a one day symposium in Montreal on Tuesday, March 10, 2015, marking the thirtieth anniversary of the creation of what is now one of the largest collections in North America of research materials on the Holocaust. The Collection was established in 1984 by Montreal architect, businessman, and philanthropist David Azrieli, CM, CQ, M.Arch (1922-2014), whose parents, brother, and sister died in the Holocaust. The symposium begins at 11:00 a.m. in the D.B. Clarke Theatre (Hall Building, 1455 de Maisonnveuve Blvd W.) with a keynote by Christopher Browning, the Frank Porter Graham Professor Emeritus of History at UNC-Chapel Hill and a distinguished scholar of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. After a response and question and answer period, we will break for lunch (on our own) and return at 2:00 p.m. for a panel of emerging and established Holocaust scholars from Concordia, Texas A&M, Michigan, and Graz, followed by remarks describing the work of the Azrieli Foundation’s Holocaust Survivor Memoirs Program and a second keynote at 4:40 p.m. by Debórah Dwork, the Rose Professor of Holocaust History at Clark University and an historian whose research embraces many key issues in Holocaust history, from the lives of Jewish children to the many functions of Auschwitz. We will end the day with a reception sponsored by the Azrieli Foundation and the Consulate General of the German Federal Republic, Montreal. The McGill Tribune presents: Journalism & Media Conference
March 23-26
The McGill Tribune is hosting a Journalism & Media conference, a 4-day long FREE conference that will feature speakers, panels, workshops, and two keynote speakers, all focusing on different aspects of journalism and media. There will be many notable speakers scheduled to speak, including former CBC director Mary-Jo Barr, The Walrus Editor-in-Chief Jonathan Kay, and Montreal Gazette Editor-in-Chief Lucinda Chodan.
