On Thursday September 26th at 4:00 PM, Robert Tittler, a distinguished professor of History Emeritus of Concordia University will be giving a lecture on “Portraiture, Poetry and Self-Presentation in Post-Reformation Yorkshire: the Kaye Panels of 1567.” This paper discusses the ways in which a minor Yorkshire gentry family, John and Dorothy Kaye, used a four-part, mixed media tableau to assert their qualifications for gentility and, therefore, their social legitimacy, all on the eve of the Northern Rising. It raises questions about the meaning of portraiture outside the usual royal and aristocratic circles. It has much to say about social mobility, concepts of honour, and political networking in a rural society. The event will take place in Thomson House 404, 3650 McTavish.
