The University and the Police: Canadian and International Perspectives
Many members of the McGill University community were shocked and angered at the intervention of riot police on campus last Thursday, 10 November. In response to these events, which raise fundamental questions regarding academic freedom and the nature of the university, a group of historians have decide to hold a round table discussion on the history of the university and the police at McGill, across Canada, and in international contexts including Greece, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. We hope that this forum will provide a historical and international perspective to the dialogue surrounding this issue, while allowing members of the university community to discuss and debate signal questions facing us as a community.
